Sound Up Sunday ~ Volume 1

Yes! Today marks the start of this new series of weekly posts. I’m super excited about it!
Every week I’m going to have a song or two that I’ve really been digging on and jamming to and probably some reasons why.
I’ve already got two lined up for you today so let’s go!

SomeKindaWonderful – Reverse

WOO! First video to be featured. This group, okay so I actually just recently heard about them and this song, through my internship actually and I have not been able to turn the song off since I first heard it last week! The band is called SomeKindaWonderful and the song is “Reverse” and honestly I love it!!!
The lead singer’s voice has that rough, sexy, scratchy, haunting, I want to hear more from you tone. (Music listeners you know what I mean!)
Plus the images in this video are just amazing…beautiful, haunting and perfectly telling of the story in the song.

Speaking of the story in the song…let’s talk about that, not too much though. I want you to watch it. Let’s just say the song is called “Reverse” for a reason. The story is told in reverse and it’s magnificent. It’s a bit scandalous but it sounds so good. Okay I’ll say it, it’s about cheating. Seriously just listen!

I’m seriously digging on this group. They are heading out on tour with New Politics and Bad Suns in a couple of weeks and I may or may not be attending their Minneapolis show. Their sound is amazing. I just discovered they have their soundcloud  on their website so they are fully and easily streamable (did just invent a word…) Just go to SomeKindaWonderful. I seriously recommend this group…they are phenomenal!

Meghan Trainor – All About That Bass

If you use the internet or listen to the radio at all, I know you have heard this song and frankly it has been my jam for weeks. I was driving home from work one night when it came on and the second I heard the beat I was dancing in the car. Then I started listened to the lyrics and instantly went “BODY POSITIVITY! YES!!!”
See I’m a happy plus sized woman, but at one point I was simply ashamed of myself…I wish I had a song like this back then. Something that would have made me laugh and feel proud of who I am regardless. I got to that point on my own before this song came out, but this is still just perfect to me! “Every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top” That right there could be an anthem in itself!
And I wouldn’t be me if I didn’t touch on the little bit of stupid controversy that this has caused. In my opinion the controversy around this awesome song is stupid. Essentially what is happening is comments are pouring onto this video fat-shaming Meghan Trainor and calling her offensive.
One such comment said, “Great, now we have a song to encourage lazy girls to be lazy!” to which I simply scoffed. I wish I could meet the guy who wrote that and dare him to call me lazy to my face! However that is the tamest of the comments I had seen. People are incredibly vulgar with their comments and it’s horrendous and just saddening.
There is also a barrage of comments centered around the lyric “I’m bringing booty back/Go ahead and tell them skinny bitches that” I will admit that line in itself can be taken very offensively but people are refusing to ignore the fact that directly after that she adds, “Nah, I’m just playing. I know you think you’re fat/ But I’m here to tell ya/ Every inch of you is perfect from the bottom to the top.” I’m getting so frustrated with people using the “Skinny bitches” line as their argument when there is more to it, the end of this verse is dedicated to telling all women that they are perfect too!
The other argument I have seen along these lines is that her chorus still has the line “Boys like a little more booty to hold at night” even after saying the skinny girls are perfect too, but I’m going to dispute that in one major way:

It is the CHORUS of a POP SONG.  The very definition of a chorus is “a part of a song that is repeated after each verse” so of course she’s going to repeat that part, it’s would have made sense to change it, pop songs don’t typically have that much differentiation and like I said, IT’S THE CHORUS!

Basically here’s the main fact….if you’re still offended by this…turn the song off and take your negativity elsewhere please. I’ve had near 24 years of offense coming at me from all angles. I’ve had nothing but disgust and hatred and pop culture telling me I’m a disgrace all my life and now if I can have 3 minutes and 10 seconds of body positivity from ONE thing, frankly all you naysayers need to sit down and shut up — because those of us who are enjoying this song, well it’s about damn time we had something like this!

On a side note, can we please talk about the splits that sassy dancing man pulled off in the video?
Seriously! YES!!!!!! Everything about this is YES! Song, Video, Choreography ~ EVERYTHING = YES!
